Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason’s pregame speeches are must-see performances with the passion of a preacher and the cadence of a rapper.

They are not rehearsed. But they are not random, either.

And they are indisputably entertaining. Fans love the chest-thumping sound bites of Mason’s locker-room pep talks when the videos hit social media. And they sometimes even surprise Mason when he watches the playback hours after Vanderbilt’s games.

“I’m just in the moment. Maybe it’s a trance,” Mason said. “I’m not a rapper. But when Jay-Z goes into the studio, they say he doesn’t have a pen or paper. That’s how I feel. It just flows.”
