Tim Esmay grew up in the shadow of the Arizona State campus, dreaming of donning the legendary Sun Devil uniform one day. His dream came true first as a player, then twice as an assistant, and finally when he took over the storied program as head coach in 2010. While plying the coaching trade throughout the southwest, Esmay’s mind was still on Arizona State. Coach Esmay has a bar that is set incredibly high, but feels that he is up to the challenge.
Arizona State and Coach Esmay are big proponents of the mental game and have utilized the services of former guest Brian Cain. We talk to Coach Esmay about the impact of trying to control those things that we can control and getting hold of thoughts that could impact our performance.
Here’s a link to a story about Corey Hahn, a highly touted recruit to Arizona State who was paralyzed in a game his freshman season and who the Sun Devils honor each game by wearing his #34 on their stirrups.
