TC178: Butch Thompson, Auburn

Long mentioned among the top assistant coaches in NCAA Division 1 baseball, Butch Thompson finally gets his shot to direct things as he guides Auburn Baseball in his first season as head coach. Coach Thompson has a resume that looks very similar to many others in his position, having stops at many schools and, as the old saying goes, paid his dues. That includes a stop at Huntingdon College where his pay was $150 a month plus a dorm room plus a meal ticket. But for a guy who, like many former guests on Top Coach, knew that he wanted to coach from an early age, that was a small price to pay. Thompson really made a name for himself the last several years working with John Cohen and molding the Mississippi State pitching staff into one of the best in D1 baseball.

In this episode Coach Thompson recalls how his former head coach at Birmingham Southern, Brian Shoop, either paid for all of his Masters Degree classes or somehow arranged for it to happen. Either way he’s he’s eternally grateful for this gracious act of paying it forward. He also talks about how he squares the objective of winning with his philosophy of building character.
