Gino DiMaria has been a successful football coach and summer baseball coach for almost two decades in Las Vegas. This season, however, he was asked to take over an already successful baseball program at Bishop Gorman. Coach DiMaria appears to be up for the task, keeping Gorman in the top ten in the nation all season. Of course, it looks like he may be stepping back a bit from his assistant coaching duties for the football team, as most of the sports have year round demands.
You may recognize the name of one of Coach DiMaria’s starting pitchers, as his father made a name for himself both in Las Vegas and in Major League Baseball. Chase Maddux is one of Gorman’s stars and dad, Greg, is the full time pitching coach this spring. Gino is equally proud of his entire staff, which includes one former Navy Seal.
Along the way in our chat this week, Coach DiMaria talks a bit about his late father, Izzy, who was well known for his summer American Legion coaching and the pasta dinners he made every Thursday night for the football team.
