By all accounts, the days of the multi-decade high school coach has gone the way of tube TVs and one dollar gasoline. Just when you spot an up-and-comer with a bright future, he decides to take an administrative job or move into private business. So to find a guy like John Lowery of Jefferson High School in West Virginia is actually quite remarkable. Coach Lowery is number three all time in wins for high school coaches, having just crossed the 1,200 mark. In what was a pretty amazing coincidence, the winning pitcher for win #1200 is the grandson of one of Coach Lowery’s former players. Now that’s longevity.
Coach Lowery doesn’t teach any longer, but is a constant presence at the baseball field, 45 years since he first filled out a lineup card. The stories he tells can only come from a guy whose poured his life into the game.
