We finally make it out to the west coast to visit with a high school coach. Brett Kay is the head coach at JSerra Catholic High School in beautiful San Juan Capistrano, California. Although this school didn’t even exist until the 21st century, they’ve quickly grown and made a name for themselves in the athletic orbit of Southern California. In fact, as of this recording, JSerra is the number four team in the nation.
Although the topic comes up quite a bit, the one-sport high school athlete is probably no more evident than in southern California. In fact, Coach Kay says it’s rare to have a football or basketball player on his roster. A one-sport athlete himself in high school, Coach Kay regrets the fact he didn’t play other sports and wishes that it were different at his school.
Coach Kay talks quite a bit about the lessons that he learned playing several seasons of minor league baseball and the benefits that being a catcher has afforded him as a baseball coach.
