TC397: Ryan Copeland, University of Illinois-Springfield

When Chris Ramirez made the trek north to take over the baseball program at the University of Illinois-Springfield, you began to notice that there was some great baseball be played in Illinois’ capitol city. Coach Ramirez has since moved on, but Ryan Copeland hasn’t missed a beat, leading the charge — all the way to the NCAA D2 championship tournament in Cary, North Carolina this year. We fully expect that big things are still to come.

In this episode, Coach Copeland talks about the history of UIS (formerly Sangamon State), growing up near Chicago, playing four sports, focusing on baseball in high school, travel ball, playing collegiately for Jim Brownlee and Mark Kingston at Illinois State, how the recruiting landscape has changed, transition to pro baseball, medical issues, entering coaching as a 17U coach, landing the assistant coach position at UIS, what he learned from a lifetime of pitching, the GLVC conference, and recruiting.
