As often pointed out on Top Coach, baseball coaches have to do it all. From grounds keeping, to uniforms to concessions to bus driving. Oh yeah, there’s a little coaching in there as well. Well, one of the duties that often falls upon coaches is to try to get fans in the seats. Part of that is through winning and part through making the games into must see events. That’s where today’s guest comes in. Jesse Cole is the owner of the Savannah Bananas, a summer collegiate baseball team in Savannah, Georgia that competes in the Coastal Plain League. Jesse and the Bananas have garnered international attention because of what goes on at every single game. And to sold out crowds, we might add.
In this episode, Jesse talks about his own baseball background and aspirations, playing baseball at Wofford College, how a shoulder injury changed his baseball path, landing the GM job at Gastonia, proposing to his wife on the field during a game (fireworks!), moving to Savannah after the pro team left, creating raving fans, the innovative fan experience, all-inclusive tickets, data that shows that players play better in better environments, and the importance of stories.
