TC329: Scott Laverty, Chapman University

One doesn’t necessarily think of California when they think of NCAA D3 hotbeds — to a great extent because there’s only nine D3 teams in the entire state, and they’re all located in the southern part of the state. But just like most baseball in California, these teams are good. And topping it off this season is Chapman University, your NCAA D3 national champs for 2019. Our guest this week is the head coach for Chapman, Scott Laverty.

In this episode, Coach Laverty talks about some of the things that attract students to Chapman, Chapman’s title run and previous titles, his playing time at Cal-Riverside and the legendary coaches he played for, coaching at Redlands, the SCIAC conference (the only D3 conference in California), the difficulty of scheduling outside the conference, facilities, recruiting, creative staffing, what makes a good coach, and Chapman Baseball’s work with Team Impact.
