One would assume that a Florida boy doesn’t dream of playing or coaching baseball in February in Pennsylvania, but then again, some opportunities are too good to pass up. Such is the case with Florida State alum and long time Mike Martin assistant, Mike Bell. Getting ready to kick off his inaugural season with the Pitt Panthers, we’re guessing that Coach Bell will overlook some of those 30-something degree game days in March.
In this episode, Coach Bell talks about the storied program at Pitt, the fact that he’s only Panther Baseball coach #5 (!), growing up in Florida, playing his collegiate baseball at Florida State, getting drafted two rounds behind Tom Brady by the Montreal Expos, what he learned in pro ball, trying to find a job after the pros, what he learned from Coach Martin, assembling a new staff (coaches and support staff), inheriting a roster, and being a CEO of an organization.
