This week we head out to Riverside, California to talk to the head coach at California Baptist University, Gary Adcock. Coach Adcock has overseen the program’s rise from NAIA to NCAA D2 and now to NCAA D1 in the 2018-19 season. Not only are the athletic programs growing, but CBU has seen enrollment rise from around 2,000 not that long ago to over 10,000 currently. And as a local boy, Coach Adcock could be prouder or more satisfied with what has transpired.
In this episode Coach Adcock talks about growing up in Riverside, the competitive part of the game that drew him to baseball, learning to coach, landing the position at CBU, the move from NAIA to NCAA D2 to NCAA D1, his advice for young coaches, his advice to veteran coaches on encouraging young coaches, patience, his recruiting philosophy, “fit”, travel baseball, junior colleges, the attributes of a good recruiter, and how to handle different coaches with unique aspirations.
We would like to thank the head coach at Fresno Pacific University, Oscar Hirschkorn, for recommending this week’s guest. Thanks, Coach!
