These midweek episodes of Top Coach are allowing us to introduce you to coaches not normally featured in this space. Additionally, we’re taking the opportunity to include other people that might not fit the traditional coach role. This episode is a perfect example, as we not only branch out to track & field for the first time, but bring in a key member of most modern support staffs, the Director of Operations.
This week, we’re talking to the Director of Operations for the University of Southern California Track & Field program, Kyrah McCowan. Buckle your seat belts, because Kyrah is hitting this one at full speed! And although still quite young, she’s got stories typically reserved for long time veterans.
In this episode Kyrah talks about how a missed interview turned into opportunity, her position as staff assistant to Lane Kiffin, her unexpected and remarkable journey from Tennessee to Southern California, her relationship to the legendary Monte Kiffin, how a position is sometimes more “fit” than perceived competencies, her tenure with USC football, building relationships, the importance of reputation, and how she’s built her own position and responsibilities with USC Track & Field.
Kyrah’s Tip of the Day:
- “Stay open. The athletics administration field is very competitive. You can take a most unconventional route.”
