TC252: Mike Gonzales, El Toro (CA) HS

Trying to stand out in the vast and deep baseball landscape of Southern California is a difficult task. We’ve had some of the guys on Top Coach who’ve managed to do it. And the latest to sit atop that mountain is the head coach at El Toro High School, the school that can lay claim to the best program in Southern California in 2017. Mike Gonzales just happens to have been raised in the neighborhood and is an alum of El Toro High School. He’s been long acknowledged by his peers as one of the best coaches in the region and we’re glad today to make sure the rest of the coaching community knows about him.

In this episode, Coach Gonzales talks about El Toro’s 2017 championship, the history of El Toro High School and the city that was formerly known as El Toro, his collegiate journey through Santa Ana College and San Jose State, his brief sales career out of college, the high level players that have come out of ETHS and the area, multi-sport athletes, how he’s changed through the years, leadership, communication, the philosophy of selflessness, El Toro Baseball 101, Christmas Parties, and his son “Nacho”.

Notable quotes:

  • “The success for me is the relationships I’ve built.”
  • “If I’m the smartest guy in the room, then I’m probably in the wrong room.”
