TC247: Dan Cimini, University Liggett HS (MI)

Four state championships in the last six years across multiple classes for University Liggett High School.  and head coach Dan Cimini. Coach Cimini and his boys are on a roll and they have the attention of the rest of the state of Michigan. This tiny private high school continues to play up over their head (in class size) against much larger schools, but the wins keep coming. But Coach Cimini will tell you that it’s not the wins that are the most important things in his life these days. That was all put in perspective back in 2011 as his heart stopped a couple of times on the emergency room table. Needless to say, he looks at things a bit differently now.

In this episode, Coach Cimini talks about the high academic private school where he works, how his formative years were like the movie Sandlot, the competitive nature of baseball in Michigan, the annual spring trip, the difference in players from 20 years ago and now, his changing views of success, his coaching demeanor, the position of extra-curricular activities, keeping people happy, multi-sport athletes, learning to fail, and his new book, The Church of Baseball.

Notable quotes:

  • “Don’t worry about wins and losses. Love your players.”
  • “Winning takes care of itself. You take care of everything else.”
  • “Everything counts.”
  • “Put a lot of love into it.”
  • Don’t focus on the outcome. Focus on the process.”
  • “We’re talking about baseball 12 months a year.”
