Since the dawning of the 21st Century, Kermit Smith has plied the coaching trade at NCAA D2 schools, Belmont Abbey and Lander — and, it must be added, was extremely successful, appearing in the D2 World Series on multiple occasions. Â That caught the attention of Appalachian State, who would love to see Coach Smith bring some of that magic to Boone, North Carolina.
In this episode, Coach Smith talks about the difference between D1 and D2, his many connections to Appalachian State, his days as a weightlifter, what influenced his decision to go into college coaching, why he made the move to Appalachian State, the beautiful area in which he now resides, and why he still finds handwritten notes so valuable.
Notable quotes:
- “I’ll go wherever you take me.” Rebecca Smith (Kermit’s wife) prior to another opportunity.
- “There was nothing that didn’t attract me here.” On his move to Appalachian State

Coach Kermit Smith is a Great guy and top notch coach. APP ST is lucky to have him.
Great interview, but you butchered our name…It’s pronounced APP-UH-LATCH-UN STATE! NOT APP-UH-LAY-SHUN!!!!! 🙂
Believe me, Yosef, I’ve heard it from everyone! And I should know better. Some of my Appalachian forbears are rolling over in their graves. 🙂
