Jon Groth learned pretty quickly that there are many things in life more important than baseball. After a successful run at Tyler (TX) Junior College, including a national championship, there were some significant changes in the program. Coach Groth took this a a chance for a bit of a respite and to focus on his family. Then while in Alaska coaching his summer team, the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks, this otherwise healthy coach got blind-sided with what turned out to be a long term medical issue.
In this episode, Coach Groth talks about his medical issues and long term recovery, the Alsaka Baseball League, his successful run at Tyler, his Who’s Who of mentors (Ron Maestri, Mark Johnson, Jack Stallings), his “Dear Jon” exit from pro ball, and the work/life balance.
