Now that we’ve got our foot in the door in Arkansas, we plan on returning occasionally. Our trip to Arkansas this time around takes us to Pine Bluff, where we’ll talk to the head coach at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Carlos James. UAPB and the city of Pine Bluff have been known to produce their share of NFL players, but Coach James plans to turn this into a place that’s known for baseball. He’s kicking off that tradition by stringing together multiple 20-win seasons and several conference division championships in a row.
In this episode Coach James talks about teaching young players how to be men, limited resources (4.9 scholarships and a $35k budget), his staff (one paid assistant), former assistants that have moved onto bigger opportunities, encouraging his staff to work camps at bigger schools to learn and make connections, and taking his wife along on road trips to show what a good relationship looks like.
