Jump on the Operations Bandwagon

by Jack Warren, Top Coach editor and host

Jack W 3Look around the baseball landscape and you’ll notice how many organizations, teams, and schools are adding an Operations person to their staff. This is not just spreading more responsibility among the existing coaching staff. I’m talking about a distinct Director of Operations position. And I’m not just talking about the big schools from the power conferences. Take a look across the landscape from the SEC schools to D3 to JUCO to high school to travel ball organizations. Seems it pays to have a staff position to oversee logistics and administration.

Some trends are just fads and some trends are movements. Typically the latter answers these questions: a) Does it make sense? b) Will it pay dividends? In the case of an Operations person, it just makes sense. Adding a coach doesn’t always pay for itself. In fact, in a pure cost-benefit analysis, it might be hard to justify the addition of one additional coach. An Operations staffer is not only easier to justify in many cases, it could end up saving money and resources in the short run and the long haul.

nashville-general-jackson_twitterUntil now, there’s really been no one place where you can go to learn the various aspects that make up Operations. In fact, despite the position’s prevalence in athletic programs across the country, you’d be hard pressed to find a single session devoted to the topic at a convention, conference, or clinic.

That’s where Top Coach comes in. On August 4-5, 2017, we’re conducting our first ever Top Coach Ops Con in Nashville. Just announced last week, the buzz has been tremendous. And if for no other reason than the list of speakers we’ve secured so far, this would be a worthy investment for your program. This one’s going to be an easy sell to your AD or other checkbook-wielding administrator. With the topics that will be covered, you’d be hard pressed not to come out of the conference seeing a manifold return on your investment.
